How To Create A Static External Ip Address

Hi,

Here's the problem. I have a PC running Windows XP SP3. It connects to the Internet through the LAN.

The user of this computer connects to it remotely via VNC, but once in a while the IP changes so connection is not possible until the new externl IP is entered.

The question is, how to set it up so connection is "always' possible?

Thanks...

You should be able to contact your ISP and request a static IP address. Some charge a fee for this, but your external IP address will stay what you want it to be.

You can always use something like DynDNS or it's free competitors. Basically, an agent is placed on the PC (or the router supports the service), and it automatically updates some hosted DNS records (such as "bobspc.free-dns.org"), which allows you to do whatever is needed.

Of course, opening a machine to external VNC access is just about as sketchy as opening RDP up - may as well invite the world in. Using a non standard port MAY help, but in the end, the best way to do it is either with VPN's or something like LogMeIn or TeamViewer. They don't leave you TOO open to the world - any would be intruders would have to break into your TeamViewer or LogMeIn account.

Logmein is the best choice since it uses standard HTTPS over the web and it does not need any holes open on the firewall. VNC is sketchy as Erik said. If you don't keep that updated, once any authentication exploitation found on the version you are running, somebody will have fun with the box.

I have set up a Dyn DNS service

Then just set up port forewarding to my PC but as everyone has said its insecure and not recommended. You can set up this service through Dyn to lock it down and use a VPN (Or even make your own) to connect your machine.

DynDNS is definitely the easiest and best.  Set it up on the router and port forward whichever service you require (e.g. RDP-3389)

FreeState

I agree with P.Chin on the endorsement of LogMeIn... I've been using it for about two years to connect to stand-alone PC's in various locations and never have to worry about their IP addresses.

Can't you assign a static IP address to this desktop on your server's DNS? Same one as it is now (when working). Saves paying for a static IP through your provider.

Use DynDNS and port forward the needed ports 9600 I think.

However, most VNC passwords and connections are un-secure. Data traversing the network is sent in plain text, so an eavesdropper will be able to capture the data w/i relative ease.

Have you considered using log me in or a similar service?

logmein all day every day.

Fast, secure, easy to use, free.... awesome !!!

Worth noting that LogMeIn is limiting the number of free computers on your account to 10 now, if you want unlimited "free" machines you need to purchase a LogMeIn Central subscription which removes the restriction.  I would def recommend LMI have been using it since launch in both local gov and private enterprise.

Not sure if it would work with a different login for each bank of 10 computers? Or am I being naïve?!!

Juventino - If there is a near-term upgrade to Win 7/8 (or if you have another machine running those OSes), then you'd be able to use Pertino.  Our client does not require a static IP address to maintain an always-on connection.

One thing you might also consider is using Hamachi (owned by LogMeIn) to create a VPN. Setup is rather simple. I have the client installed on my work PC and remote to home all the time to access and stream my music.
